Alhamdulillah in all situations

All praise belong to Allah the Lord of the worlds.

The One without Whom nothing is possible.

Alhamdulillah to the One Who created me and mould me into what I am today.

Alhamdulillah from the beginning to the end.

Alhamdulillah in good times when I have all I can ever ask for.

Alhamdulillah in bad times when I feel constricted from all sides.

Alhamdulillah for when I cried my eyes out wishing I was never born.

Alhamdulillah for when I laughed till my ribs cracked of too much laughter.

Alhamdulillah when I smiled absent-mindedly to myself because I feel so good inside.

Alhamdulillah when my face look so darkened with grief that people around me wondered what calamity has befallen me.

Alhamdulillah that I have my share of good and bad.

Just as many creations of Allah including the elite among the Prophets and Messengers.

Alhamdulillah for everything in all situations.

My Dear Ramadan !

Ramadan, Oh Ramadan!

My dear Ramadan

How come you are visiting, I am not at home to welcome you

How come your entrance met my absence from the place you expected

Your arrival met my eyes red and wet with tears streaming down my face

Oh Ramadan, My dear Ramadan!

In what way do you wish me to welcome you?

Crying or rejoicing?

If I cry, it is for the sorrow of not being there at home to see you arrive

If I cry, it is for the fate that befell me in your absence

If I cry, it is out of grief till I come home to embrace you before you leave

If I rejoice, it is only that

Even not at home, I still smell the fragrance of your entrance

Ramadan, Oh Ramadan!

My dear Ramadan

The moon is dark

The sky is grey

The clouds are gathering

My heart is heavy

My tears are flowing

My mind is clouded

But you are still very dear to my heart

Where ever I may be

Oh Ramadan, My dear Ramadan!

(تَقَبَّلَ اللّهُ مِنَّ وَ مِنْكُمْ)

Ramadan met me in a place I hated to be, so I wrote this poem to express my feelings.

Trust in Allah alone

Don’t depend on the people

Without placing your trust in Allah first

The least the people can do is maintain the status quo

Or create an obstacle in your path knowingly or unknowingly

Perhaps by Allah’s mercy they will help alleviate your situation

That is if they mean good for you and hope for reward from Allah

But some people prefer to profit from others’ misery

For that you can not depend on the people

Without placing your trust in Allah first

But if you depend on Allah alone

Allah is all encompassing of your situation

He will alleviate your troubles for you

Raise your status among the believers

Grant you even beyond what you ask of Him

For your patience and reliance on Him alone

Being patient is not being stupid

Have you forgotten that:

Inna Allah ma’a As-Saabirin

Truly! Allah is with the patient. Al-Baqarah (Q2:153)

Are you not aware that:

If Allah helps you, none can overcome you,and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let believers put their Trust. Al-Imran (Q3:160)

Today is my birthday

Today is my birthday but I am not celebrating, I don’t celebrate birthdays and ever since I was born, my birthday has never been celebrated. I do not know why I was singled out for this treatment by my parents as my other siblings’ birthdays were celebrated and they had their framed birthday pictures grazing our living room as a proof, but I had none. All of them had their pictures taken standing alone with a birthday cake in front of them holding on a cake-knife in a pose. But in my own childhood picture I was just standing alone by myself, no cake! And where there was a cake, I was standing next to someone else whose birthday it was, definitely not mine and that picture does not belong to us either.

If life is a friend…

If life humiliates me, you are receiving its grace.

If life turns its back on me, you are receiving its warmest embrace.

If life gives me tears, you are receiving its broadest smile.

If life deprives me, you are receiving its abundance.

If life turns my horizon cloudy, you are receiving its illuminated path.

If life renders me homeless, you are receiving its lofty shelter.

If life gives me sleepless nights, you are receiving its calmest slumber.

If life lays my bed with thorns, you are receiving its bed of roses.

If life showers me with mud and stones, you are receiving its shower of flowers and fragrance.

If life clothes me with rags, you are receiving its embellished garments.

If life stifles my voice, you are receiving its unbridled freedom for your voice.

If life restrains my will power, you are receiving its free rein to do as you will.

If life gives me bitter and sour taste, you are receiving its sweet and delicious taste.

If life brings me misery, your are receiving its delightful goodness.

If life embraces you today, be sure it may turn against you tomorrow.

If life humiliates you today, be sure things may turn in your favour.

If life is turning towards you, be sure not to be complacent.

If life is ever changing, that is the only constant thing.

If life is futile with all its endearments, here today gone tomorrow.

If life is beautiful, it can also be ugly.

If life sparkles, it can also be gray.

If life honours, it can also debase.

If life is rolling in a cycle, your turn may soon come.

If life is a friend; be sure it has never been a loyal friend.

Look around you, take heed and be warned.

Your charity in a gift wrap

Don’t turn your charity into a foot that steps on others pride.

Your charity is an act of faith,
An act of obedience to Allah,
An act of love and concern,
A selfless act with your hope only in the reward from Allah, so I believe.

The best of your charity is the one you give in secret,
Not just to others, even to the receiver.
How come that you announce when you give your charity?
You called to say, come to me, I have a charity for you.
Or you say, I am giving you this and that as a charity.

Have you ever thought about the dignity of the receiver of your charity?
Perhaps, the receiver hates to stretch their hands,
But stretch they must out of helplessness.
Helplessness does not equal to lack of dignity.

Help the receiver keep their dignity and be discreet with your charity.
A discreet charity has more value in the eyes of the receiver
And more reward from Allah than open charity.
Yes, the giving hand is better than the receiving hand.
But the receiving hand does not always wish to be so.

Be discreet in your charity,
Don’t turn it into a foot that step on others pride.
Don’t impose your charity on others,
Even if you think they need it,
They might not want it.
You offer, they reject, your intention is already rewarded,
Say salaam and move on, don’t insist, in case you might hurt their pride by so doing.

This is not to say, not to give charity.
By all means do, because it is an act of faith full or reward from the most High.
But let your wisdom precede your charity,
So you do not have to step on other people’s pride.

One more thing,
Why don’t you help your friend conceal their shame
Of helplessness and being in need
By concealing your charity as a gift?
A dignified heart is more receptive to a gift than a charity.

So, if you seek me out to give your charity, then don’t rub it in.
Help me keep my dignity and be discreet about it.
I know you know I know it’s a charity in a gift wrap.

What is righteousness..?

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.  (Al-Baqarah Q2:177)
