Earlier in the week, I met yet another bible peddler who might have thought me an easy prey for her Gospel. I was on the bus and she asked to sit next to me and I obliged as normal. Right away she started a conversation with an opening that goes “You dressed like this because you are a Muslim” referring to my full-covering hijab and I answered, “Yes” and she continued, “You are right in dressing like this because, us Christians as well cannot pray without covering our hair”. I looked at her properly, I don’t know what she was wearing underneath, but she was covered in a large woolen shawl, of course her head uncovered, she is a blond and Polish looking lady. She continued talking about how from the outside you can tell someone who has a deep spiritual connection with God and so on.
Then she went on about fasting, how she is preparing as it will soon be the Christian Lent. She said, “One can only celebrate xmas properly as a christain if they had fasted the Lent before”. She then related her conversation to her Muslim neighbour who is always fasting and being very devoted Muslim always counting on her rosary like them Christians. That gave me a clue she is Catholic, I asked and she affirmed to it. Next she went on about a Lady Fatima and some other Lady Saint I did not grasp properly and I told her I have no clue. She said, “Everybody knows Lady Fatima and Fatima is a Muslim name too” I know there is a Lady Fatima in Catholic beliefs but I have not been curious enough to find out the relations, not something to waste my time on I guess.
The Polish looking lady went on to ask me if I believe in visions and I said I don’t in the Christian way but I believe Allah(swt) send true dreams to the pious Muslims sometimes. Then she went, “I see visions” and added that the Lady Saint she mentioned appears to her to tell her things. She then showed me a reddish burn patch between her thumb and index finger being of some kind of spiritual indication from her vision; she explained in details how she happened to get the burn and what it meant. I listened to her all along, commenting or giving occasional response as she talks. I found myself readily listening to her because she was kind of a pleasant disposition from when she asked to sit next to me, so my spirit did not repel her to use a Christian-like term. She told me how she was a very devoted catholic from when she was young but got corrupted along the way and did not practice her religion for a long time but eventually found her way back. The first day she returned to the church was so full of spirituality that she realised what she had been missing and that God was ever ready to take her back.
I went along with her till she asked if I believe in Jesus and was referring to Jesus as God. I got switched on with that and I took over the speaking platform. I told her, us Muslims believe in Jesus to be Prophet and Messenger of Allah(swt) sent to the children of Isreal. We believe in him according to what Allah told us about him in the Quran and that he is neither God nor son of God but only a messenger. I added that believing in all the prophets of God is an essential pillar of Islam without which someone will cease being a Muslim if they don’t, all the prophets of God include Jesus and those from the Old Testament and of course the last of them Muhammad (saw). But our belief in them does not elevate them beyond what Allah(swt) told us about them in the Quran.
She went “but Jesus died on the cross, do you believe in that”, I gave an emphatic “No” response, and went on to say that Allah(swt) told us in the Quran that he was neither killed nor crucified but it was made to appear to them and the witnesses were full of confusion as to the event. Jesus was risen up and he will appear again as one of the signs of the last hour and he will be back a Muslim and rule among the people with Justice according to what our prophet told us in his hadith. She asked me “in what form would Jesus return, would he be conceived and born by a woman?” I think I did not answer that question as properly as I should but I told her, he will return not as a baby but as an adult like he was taken up and he will complete his lifespan and die naturally just like any human being.
I also touched on Maryam being chosen by Allah, purified and preferred above all created women, Maryam and her Son, Jesus were both signs of Allah for those who believe. I was going on and on, and I think she was dumbfounded as to how much or how well I could express myself in this context. When I paused to take a breath, she went “but you do not look like a Muslim”, which is kind of self-contradictory, because the first line of conversation from her confirmed my identity as a Muslim, when she referred to my full-covering hijab after asking to sit next to me.
She must have thought, I am some kind of illiterate, an easy prey for her gospel who can be easily hoodwinked with her bible mantra. Maybe she assumed I know nothing about my religion or perhaps can’t express myself in English as well as she found me to. Perhaps she meant I wasn’t Arabic, Asian or Somali looking. I gave her a brief of my origin, just for her to know a well versed Muslim does not have to be of a stereotypical look, in case that is what she was thinking. Whatever her initial intention was, the conclusion is, they were not realised and I proved her assumptions wrong whatever they may be.
While I was still telling her about my background, I got to my stop and I told her I need to get off, I asked what her name is, gave mine too, shook hands and I got off the bus. On getting off the bus, I realised, subhanallah! the whole bus must have been listening to me going on about Jesus, the Prophet and Messenger of Allah.
(Remember) when the angels said: “O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word [“Be!” – and he was! i.e. ‘Îsa (Jesus) the son of Maryam (Mary)] from Him, his name will be the Messiah ‘Îsa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, and will be one of those who are near to Allah.”
“He will speak to the people in the cradle and in manhood, and he will be one of the righteous.”
She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me.” He said: “So (it will be) for Allah creates what He wills. When He has decreed something, He says to it only: “Be!” – and it is.
And He (Allah) will teach him [(‘Îsa (Jesus)] the Book and Al-Hikmah (i.e. the Sunnah, the faultless speech of the Prophets, wisdom), (and) the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel).
And will make him [(‘Îsa (jesus)] a Messenger to the Children of Israel (saying): “I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, that I design for you out of clay, a figure like that of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah’s Leave; and I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I bring the dead to life by Allah’s Leave. And I inform you of what you eat, and what you store in your houses. Surely, therein is a sign for you, if you believe.
And I have come confirming that which was before me of the Taurat (Torah), and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a proof from your Lord. So fear Allah and obey me.
Truly! Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him (Alone). This is the Straight Path. (Al-Imran Q3:45-51)
He [‘Îsa (Jesus)] said: “Verily I am a slave of Allah, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet; “
“And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salat (prayer), and Zakat, as long as I live.”
“And dutiful to my mother, and made me not arrogant, unblest.
“And Salam (peace) be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!”
Such is ‘Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). (It is) a statement of truth, about which they doubt (or dispute).
It befits not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glorified (and Exalted) be He (above all that they associate with Him). When He decrees a thing, He only says to it: “Be!” – and it is.
[‘Îsa (Jesus) said]: “And verily Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him (Alone). That is the Straight Path.(Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism which He did ordain for all of His Prophets).” [Tafsir At-Tabari] (Maryam Q19:30-36)
O people of the Scripture (Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth. The Messiah ‘Îsa (jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, (“Be!” – and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Ruh ) created by Him; so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not: “Three (trinity)!” Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allah is (the only) One Ilah (god), glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs. (An-Nisa Q4:171)
And (remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): “O ‘Îsa (jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Did you say unto men: ‘Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?’ ” He will say: “Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner-self though I do not know what is in Yours; truly, You, only You, are the All-Knower of all that is hidden (and unseen). (Al-Maida Q5:116)
Say (O Muslims), “We believe in Allah and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma’il (Ishmael), Ishaq (Isaac), Ya’qub (Jacob), and to Al-Asbat [the offspring of the twelve sons of Ya’qub (Jacob)], and that which has been given to Musa (Moses) and ‘Îsa (jesus), and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted (in Islam).” (Al-Bakarah Q2:136)
And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah ‘Îsa (jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,” – but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them [the resemblance of ‘Îsa (jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man)], and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. ‘Îsa (jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) عليهما السلام]: (An-Nisa Q4:157)
And he [‘Îsa (jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)] shall be a known sign for (the coming of) the Hour (Day of Resurrection) [i.e. ‘Isa’s (jesus) descent on the earth]. Therefore have no doubt concerning it (i.e. the Day of Resurrection). And follow Me (Allah) (i.e. be obedient to Allah and do what He orders you to do, O mankind)! This is the Straight Path (of Islamic Monotheism, leading to Allah and to His Paradise). (Az-Zukhruf Q43:61)
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, surely (Jesus,) the son of Mary will soon descend amongst you and will judge mankind justly (as a Just Ruler); he will break the Cross and kill the pigs and there will be no Jizya (i.e. taxation taken from non Muslims). Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it, and a single prostration to Allah (in prayer) will be better than the whole world and whatever is in it.” Abu Huraira added “If you wish, you can recite (this verse of the Holy Book): — ‘And there is none Of the people of the Scriptures (Jews and Christians) But must believe in him (i.e jesus as an Apostle of Allah and a human being) Before his death. And on the Day of Judgment He will be a witness Against them.” (4.159) (See Fateh Al Bari, Page 302 Vol 7) (Hadith Bukhari 55:657)
And (remember) when the angels said: “O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allah has chosen you, purified you (from polytheism and disbelief), and chosen you above the women of the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinn) (of her lifetime).”
O Mary! “Submit yourself with obedience to your Lord (Allah, by worshipping none but Him Alone) and prostrate yourself, and Irka’i (bow down) along with Ar-Raki’un (those who bow down).” (Al-Imran Q3:42-43)
The Messiah [‘Îsa (jesus)], son of maryam (Mary), was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother [maryam (Mary)] was a Siddiqah [i.e. she believed in the Words of Allah and His Books (see Verse 66:12)]. They both used to eat food (as any other human being, while Allah does not eat). Look how We make the Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to them; yet look how they are deluded away (from the truth). (Al-Maida Q5:75)
